We drove down on Thursday and were hoping to tour Fort Sumter. With his usual magic Jared got us there just in time to park and walk onto the last ferry of the day as if he planned it that way! :) I love ferry rides and Charleston Harbor was beautiful. Fort Sumter was interesting to me. I love history and biographies. One of the fun facts we learned was that there is a huge grassy hill still unexcavated there, with large size relics to be revealed. But, they probably never will be because it would mean taring down the battery building etc. I like to think of all those treasures that will remain hidden. :) While I was taking in the history, Hannah was worried she might literally die from the muggy heat and Ben just wanted to push the stroller, no matter how hard it was for him or how many people he narrowly missed crashing into :).
We wanted to tour the aircraft carrier that lives there in the harbor, but by the time our ferry made it back, the last tour had already closed. So, we headed on to dinner. We got a recommendation for a great dinner spot and it was awesome!! It was the best seafood Jared and I have ever had and maybe the best meal period! :) So, good! The atmosphere was different and fun. You could watch the fish being cooked over the wood fire. Yum!
We stayed that night in a very nice hotel right down town, complete with lots of good rockers on the front porch. :)
The next morning we took a tour of the city in a little tour shuttle. Our guide was a native and he was wonderful. I could have listened to him for much longer. The thing that struck me the most was how unapologeticly proud he was of his city and while he acknowledged the "ugly" parts of her history to him they in no way marred her beauty, only adding complexity to her rich and very long history. I loved all the architecture and old buildings. There is a no demolition policy in Charleston. If you want building space, it has be built around the existing historical treasures or one of those treasures has to be restored for you. It was so beautiful and I've never seen anywhere like it.
We had lunch and looked through some of the market and downtown shops. Then we stopped by some very old churches and in one we were even treated to a bit of an organ exhibition. We walked by the slave market, some old cemeteries and made a stop in The Pink House, Hannah's choice :). It was pink and she just went to the door and asked to go in. :) It turned out to be the oldest building in Charleston, that now houses an art shop.
Then it was time to head home. What a great time and we still had the weekend's main event ahead of us! :)
Beautiful bridge from the ferry boat.
